The Parent's Store is your source of books and other resources for preventive parenting. Our goal is to help you parent now to prevent later difficulties with antisocial behavior, addiction and ADHD. The earlier you begin the techniques of prevention we recommend, the greater your chances of complete prevention will be. It is our mission to provide you with the tools you need to parent your at risk child.

At risk children are at risk in part, because they have a hard time with emotional intelligence. They may be intellectually bright but at risk children may be "learning disabled" when it comes to emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is is required for all three abilities of the inner triangle: ability to love, impulse control and moral reasoning. Remember, it is problems in these three abilities that cause risk for ADHD, addiction and antisocial behavior. Emotional inteligence means capacity for emotional self-awareness, self reflection, anger management, reading other people's social cues, empathy, joy in affection, impulse control, self motivation, and the ability to delay gratification. Ability to love requires, emotional self-awareness, anger management, reading other people's social cues, empathy and joy in affection. Impulse control includes self motivation and the ability to delay gratification. Moral reasoning requires empathy and self reflection. Parents need to explicitly work on building emotional intelligence in at risk kids. Below you will find books and other tools for building your child's emotional intelligence.

Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, Is a more advanced parenting book. Just Like His Father? Will give you a foundation to understand the material in this book. I recommend this book for those who have read Just Like His Father? and want to have the material reinforced. Psychology professor John Gottman explores the emotional relationship between parents and children. It's not enough to simply reject an authoritarian model of parenting (explained in Just Like His Father?), Gottman says. A parent needs to be concerned with the quality of emotional interactions. Gottman, and coauthor Joan Declaire focus first on the parent (a "know thyself" approach), and provide a series of exercises to assess parenting styles and emotional self-awareness. The authors identify a five-step "emotion coaching" process to help teach children how to recognize and address their feelings, which includes becoming aware of the child's emotions; recognizing that dealing with these emotions is an opportunity for intimacy; listening empathetically; helping the child label emotions; setting limits; and problem-solving. Chapters on divorce, fathering, and age-based differences in emotional development make Gottman's teachings detailed and useful.
